okay... so for the past year or so, I've been thinking.. when we move across the stateline into Michigan, do we live in another subdivision with close neighbors OR do we live in a home with at least a few acres. We live in a subdivision now with various rules and an association fee (think I paid $150 for this year). If living out in the country, away from the schools, then it's more driving into town and not having neighbors or probably kids really close by for our kids to play with. However, I've also found downsides to living in a neighborhood. So, just wondering.. if you all had an ideal place to live.. country on a few acres+ for your kids to roam around and explore OR to be in a neighborhood, near other families/kids, WHICH would you choose?

COUNTRY

For us it would hands down be out in the country with land. When we move back to Idaho in a couple of years, we are definitley moving to the country. We both grew up in the middle of nowhere and loved it. We've lived in subdivisions since we were married and while it does have it's perks, we really want our kids to grow up in the country.

tough choice

Wow, that is a tough one for me.  Right now we live in a subdivision.  Pros - I love having people close to us, lots of kids for Luke to play with, sidewalks, lots of socializing in the summer!  Cons - small yards (although easy to maintain), houses very close together, lots of kids gather even when you go outside just to load up in the van to go somewhere, small yards (did I mention that already?).

Ideally, I would like a house in a subdivision, but with a large yard...a little of the subdivision feel, without being on top of our neighbors.  As relaxing as country living sounds, I do think I would miss being 2 minutes away from Target, grocery, and CVS :)  I also think that we would feel lonely sometimes without our neighbors or neighborhood kids around.

Although, my husband did decide today that he would like to make a career change and maybe become a farmer, so maybe country living is in my future :)

Country for me.

We live in the country on 20 acres... yes it has its downfalls however it is really nice to let our kids play without the worry of traffic and such...we also have a very large sand pile which our boys would dearly miss. i guess im not much of a rules as far as the subdivisions go. we have a small farm which is nice for my hubby he's not much of a tv person and never sits still so a subdivision might kill him lol....we are 10 miles from southbend and 10 miles from plymouth it takes me about 15 minutes to go to either however we have a nice market in lapaz and family dollar now too...

country for us!

Hands down no comparisson ! Country all the way. The fresh air and countryside is the way to go. Yes a bit more driving to some extent but you learn when you go to town to do all your running at one time. Now is you like the idea of running to the store because you need an item then it may be a hard adjustment. But we live on a farm with animals and lots for the kids to do, we have tried to create a place that the kids want to bring their friends. Grew up in a subdivision and wouldn't do it again. We like our piece of the country :)

I would love to live on a lake my Aunt in has a beautiful house on the lake and we go up there alot over the summer and we could stay in the boats all day or just on the porch watching everyone on the water it's very relaxing and by the time we live our son is out like a light.

I really like were I am. We

I really like were I am. We live on a street that is quiet with sidewalks and nice neighbors. I finally can call a neighbor if we need an egg!!! The only problem I have is there isent as many kids here as I would like, really just us and or next door neighbor. Alot more elderly so they are nice and quiet but my kids need friends!!! I really think I would not like the country, to far away from things. I feel safe at night when my husband is working and my neighbors are outside, in the country you wouldnt have that.

country

I know that this is all just personal opinoun, but I must debate about feeling safe in the city vs the country. We are very safe in the country and don't have to worry about the traffic, the violence that is present on many city streets. We can play outside and not worry about the many dangers that city life brings. I always feel safe. The sirens of police are hardly ever heard in the country. More often than not if something happens in the country it is due to the fact that someone doesn't belong where they are at and a fluke thing.

safe

I agree that there is less crime in the country than on city streets, more room for kids to roam without getting in trouble.  But I think I understand what AWright means by feeling "safer" in the city, because I think I would feel the same way, especially if my husband wasn't home at night.  For me, it would be more of a sense of "security" (rather than safety) knowing your neighbors are 10 steps away.  If you yelled for help, someone would probably hear you.  If you needed assistance, your neighbors are right there.  When you live so close to neighbors, they tend to watch out for your house or notice anything odd, etc.  When we fall asleep on the couch at night and accidentally leave our garage door open, our neighbor calls and tells us.  Pros and cons to both sides, and of course, personal opinion.  :)  I have my likes about living close to people, but I also think I could probably get used to being in the country too....even if Target wasn't 2 minutes away :)

Thank You

Yes, thanks Jessica that is how I feel, about neighbors, and the whole safety thing. I guess I am alittle out numbered here, but I wouldnt live in the country.

subdivision

We live in a culdesac in a subdivision and LOVE it! We also have probably the largest lot here, so our backyard is huge with room for a playground, kiddie pools in the summer and we still have lots room for a makeshift baseball diamond. Our neighbors are all great. I can't wait for another summer b/c we are outside constantly with friends and always cooking out with everyone. There are some restrictions, but I have to admit I am glad that there are atleast some restrictions. I like our neighborhood to look nice. I'm sure the kids would get used to the country and not having friends around all the time, but I really love where we are now.
