What to do with this ham?
Submitted by jessica on March 18, 2008 - 3:36pm.
I bought a whole spiral sliced ham, and it's not that great. Normally, we would eat it on sandwiches and such, but it's just not that tasty. I plan on making dinner with it tonight and tomorrow, but need some ideas! Any tasty ideas for using up a not-so-great ham?

Honey Glazed Ham
If the Ham is not that great I would try to "change" the flavor with a sweet glaze...
INGREDIENTS
1 (10 pound) fully-cooked ham
1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons pineapple juice
2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons honey
1 large orange, juiced and zested
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place ham in a roasting pan.
In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, pineapple juice, honey, orange juice, orange zest, Dijon mustard, and ground cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside.
Bake ham in preheated oven uncovered for 2 hours. Remove ham from oven, and brush with glaze. Bake for an additional 30 to 45 minutes, brushing ham with glaze every 10 minutes.

Make some Ham soup with Veggies and broth it will wash out the flavor of it.
Casseroles
I always search online for casseroles to use up leftover ham. I know there are lots of recipes online but I don't have any of them handy. Soup is a great way too, because you can easily re-hydrate it in the soup. Put some into a cheesy potato soup in lieu of the bacon. If you have a bone on the ham, make sure to boil it and simmer for a while... it is great broth for soups or to cook green beans in. If you skim the broth and use it to flavor green beans, you get the bacon flavor without all the bad fat.
