What to do this summer?
Submitted by momofthree on April 24, 2008 - 8:58am.
Well, with gas prices basically taking my paycheck every week, I wanted to know if anyone had some ideas on what to do this summer that will keep money in my pockets and still have my kids having fun. We belong to a pool, so hopefully that is where we will spend some time, but does anyone have any fun ideas? My children are 3yrs old, and 1.5 year old twins. Please help!

Zoo
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you get a zoo membership for like $55 or something? I was considering looking into this myself. Even a few trips would pay for itself!
We plan on visiting alot of parks this summer! Last summer we were pretty limited with what we could do because Shawn was just a newborn and he was really fussy. This summer I want to try out several parks in the area because Luke is old enough now that he actually plays at the playground. And Shawn will be walking soon, so that is something free to do that will keep them both occupied.
Yesterday the other moms were talking about the splash pad at Rose Park (and several other area parks). I can't wait to see if Luke likes it! Last year he was freaked out by them, but we finally got him hooked on running through the sprinkler at home, so I bet he enjoys it this year!

Zoo Membership
Zoo membership is $55 and is a wonderful deal. You get in for free to a ton of different zoos, including Fort Wayne and Michigan City (Washington Park Zoo). The fee alone is covered by one visit to Fort Wayne. It also gets you a 10% discount at the Indianapolis zoo. We have done this for about 5 years, it's a great thing and supports a great cause.

We just signed up!
I just sent a check to the Potawatomi Zoo for membership, the other day. It was $63 it was the "Family Plus Level" which includes 2 Free Zoo Train tickets, a Free Members T-shirt and it allows us to bring a guest Free each time we visit. Even with the $49.50 fee, it includes Free admission to the Zoo Boo event and a quartely newsletter and Free admission on "Winter Days" at the Zoo and Free or discounted admission to over 100 zoos in the US, among other stuff. We really enjoy the zoo so we're looking forward to it!

parks/water park
There are so many nice parks in our area that are totally free! I don't know where you live, but most of the Mishawaka parks have the sprinkler pads, which are fun for most kids (they are intimidating for the little ones..I know first hand :) But, we love packing a picnic and spending an afternoon at one of them with some friends. Take some water bottles or buckets and your little ones can enjoy some water play too!
I know you belong to a pool, but Kennedy Water Park is a fun place for the little ones. It's fairly inexpensive, and again, you can pack a picnic and hang out in the pool. We have found that going at 11:00, right when they open, is best...that's typically before all the big kids or daycare groups fill up the place.
