Guess what? Last night nicholas climbed out of his crib. Crawled into our bedroom and tapped daddy on the arm. I couldn't sleep the rest of the night. Now I am freaking out about what he'll do now. I don't want him sleeping with us. We did lower the matress 2 more inches. hopefully that helps. Does anyone know if they sell thinner matresses?? any advice???

Toddler Bed

My son crawled out for the first time last week. He is 2 and we ended up buying him a toddler bed. I tell him every night that he has to stay in his bed and if he needs me he can call and I will come. He has not yet once gotten out of his bed. He was so excited. I dreaded going to a toddler bed, but it has been awesome.

How old?

How old is your child? Mine first one never slept in a crib, she went from sleeping with me to a twin bed. My son was 14 months when he started climbing out of his crib and we had to switch to a toddler bed. He does alright but does tend to get out and think that is ok. In the middle of the night though, he will call out to me. It's great that you could lower the mattress more, so I hope that helps, but if not I know they make little netting like-tents that attach to the crib and prevent them from climbing out. I had never heard of these until I had already gotten rid of my crib, but that may be something to try. I would look at Babies R Us or online. Hope this helps, and good luck.

big boy bed time

my 18 month old starting climbing out of his crib just about a week ago. I had already had a toddler bed ready so we took down his crib and last night was his first night in it. He did great!! i had to put him back in it only three times but after that he went right out. i feel much better now that he cant fall out of the crib while trying to get out. i put a baby gate across his room door so in the morning when he got up he went to the door and yelled for me, that way he couldnt get into any trouble if i didnt hear him right away. its a change but i feel its better to go right into a bed then put off the inevitable. good luck

Removable side?

Can you remove the side of the crib that goes up and down? Our crib wasn't designed to be a multi-purpose crib/bed, but after talking with someone else we realized that the bed is perfectly fine with the siderail removed. We didn't want to buy a toddler bed for such a short time, but weren't ready to buy the big bed and it worked very well as a toddler bed. As long as the mattress is lowered all the way down it wasn't a far enough fall to the floor to worry about, plus we have carpet and I put a pillow on the floor for the first couple nights just in case he rolled out. He didn't roll out more than a couple times and it was more startling than anything, he didn't cry much at all but then he figured out how to keep from rolling out.

no toddler bed here

Yes, I've heard the same thing Julie. We didn't try it with our crib with Luke, but I don't see why removing the front rail and making a make-shift day bed wouldn't work for a few months.

We opted not to do the toddler bed for 2 reasons. We knew we would need the crib again sooner rather than later for the new baby, and because I didn't want to pay for a second toddler mattress plus the toddler bed. We went straight to a twin mattress and simply started with the mattress on the floor. Once he was used to it, added the box spring under it, then a month or so later added the metal base under the bed. It saved us a bundle and worked well for Luke. It was hard for me to pass up those super-cute race car beds though....Luke would have thought that was really neat :)

I don't even want to think about the day our youngest gets out of his crib on his own. He's 14 months, so I know it's coming soon, I'm sure. He's such a busy butt, I can't even imagine trying to keep him in a bed with no rails! Do they make giant cages that fit over the top of regular twin beds??? :) j/k

I'm not sure if they make thinner mattresses though.
