ugh ! SB schools only school to be open
It is so frustrating to see that the SB schools are the only school corp in the area to be open. All others are closed even the county offices. Wouldn't one think that the corporation would look at things like the winter storm warning with mearsurable snowfall, icey roads and slick conditions .
This is so frustrating as a parent. Living out in the country our roads were not even plowed at 630 am yet and they expect to pu and safely deliver our children to schools. I truely feel sorry for the bus drivers. So many times they tell me that sb schools should have been closed when the others closed. Loss of moeny for the corp. if they close school ? so they say , but we have to make it up anyways.
Thoughts anyone ?

Seriously??
I guess I just assumed they were closed...I saw PHM and Mishawaka were closed. How can they get away with being open when everyone else is closed? And how can the justify sending the kids (and staff) to school when all other city/gov't services, libraries, etc are closed? Yes, I would be frustrated also!

Someone at work mentioned this
Out of South Bend's 30,000 students, 20% are at or below poverty level and of course a few more who are just barely above. Therefore when South Bend closes schools too often (like twice in a week as it would have been this week) then it can be a hardship on those families who either have to stay home and lose money from their very low paying job, or leave the kids unattended with no food. They are possibly safer at school with heat, free/reduced lunches and supervision.
I don't know if it is really true, but that is what someone mentioned (he doesn't even live in SB though). I do know that the news has reported a very similar rationale though for why SB doesn't do 2 hour delays... because the kids would be at home unattended or parents cannot get to work etc.
City Offices
I work for the City and we are all at work today. If my husband did not stay at home with my son and work from home. I don't know what we would do. I guess I would end up missing alot of work. I think alot of these schools go on 2 hour delay and/or close too quickly these days. I remember when I was in school we were never off. Plus once they had us in the school they decided to just keep us in there. I of course went to PHM and we even had built in snow days back then. Now you would think that they would not want to take the time off because they would have to make it up at some point in the school year because they don't have the built in snow days like they use to.
Wow!
I gotta pay closer attention to the closings! I thought for sure I saw that South Bend Schools were closed, and I was also sure I saw that the City was closed! But, if you are at work, you would know best! I must have still been sleeping when I checked...zzzzz.... :)

County offices/courts were
County offices/courts were closed.
The county roads were in bad shape this morning as well as several mornings and our bus drivers have even had trouble getting up and down some roads, but because the majority of the school is in the city the don't think its a issue for our families in the county. My husband called me when he got to work at 630 and plows had not been down our county road, nor past the a school in the county.
Hardships.... our parents delt with it when it was cancelled for us. Now the corporation is expected to ship the kids via bus to provide daycare, its a school not daycare(or should be anyways) When your child is ill you have to stay home or find care, it should be in your plan to accomodate for those situations.
The two hour delays I think are good, it provides for the citys/counties to get road crews out, for fog to burn off and to provide the safest transportation possible for the children. Again I can't stress the issues that the drivers are faced with, not only driving but dealing with 66 kids that can't sit in their seats. So many of the parent population for those underprivilaged kids are at home anyways. Doing things that don't help their poverty situations.
I agree
I hate to say it, but a lot of the poverty situtations already leave children at home evenings or weekends with little supervision. So I am not sure why cancelling school would be much different. I warned my son this morning too when he left for the bus to make sure he was good and stays quiet when the roads are like they are, because I know I don't like the kids yelling in the back when the roads are bad. I saw a Transpo bus sliding and fish tailing after leaving the bus station at 8:25 this morning and that was when the roads were at least somewhat plowed. So I am sure the buses were sliding around too.
