My son is in K and his teacher feels like he is still a little behind even though she and I have been working with him and he recieves speech once a week at school. I was thinking of maybe tutoring at sylvan since it is becoming hard for him to concentrate at home but there prices are a little steep. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can help my son. I do not want him to be behind or worse be held back at the end of the year. I am at a loss he loves school but he just does not seem to be retaining the information. I know he's trying but I don't know what else to do.

ask

There are moms on here that tutor. I do. Ask friends and family if they know someone close to your home or ask his teacher if she recommends a 4-5 grade student that you could work out a small schedule with his/her parent.Payment that way is usually gum, candy socks, etc.
Your student is still very young and it would be a shame to burn him out or overwhelm because someone is crossing maturity and intelligence. If he is in the all day program just keep going and helpout with homework. If he isn't ask the school to have him tested to see if he qualifies. It is only sept. try not to get crazed yet. Lynn

thanks

I asked his teacher if she knew of anyone that could help and she does not know of anyone ,and unfortunatly we have no family in the area and we do not know a lot of people here. My son has always been behind and I had him tested through the snap program at the end of last year so I knew that he would be behind when school started this year I just want to make sure he gets all the help he needs and if that can't happen at home I need to find another way. I am trying to stay calm but I am just so concerned. Amanda

Lynn

We are all "friends" here, right?  :)  I would suggest talking with Lynn before paying the prices of Sylvan, especially if you would prefer a private tutor.  I don't know what Lynn charges, but she was my teacher in high school, and I would ask her to tutor my child in a heartbeat.  She is good with kids, very personable, and an all-around a good person.

I agree . . .

I'm with Jessica . . . I'd talk to Lynn. She was my kids' swim teacher this summer and they LOVED her!!! She's great!

Think it through tiles

Discovery toys has a set called Think-It-Through tiles which are great for students in all subjects. I know that it is very similar to what Sylvan uses at their centers too. Check them out and ask the teacher if something like this would help too.
