We took Luke to the dentist for the first time today, and he recommended a lingual frenectomy to correct him being "tongue tied."  It would increase the range of motion of his tongue, and hopefully improve his speech.  Overall he has good speech, however he does have trouble with his S, TH and L's.  We had him see a speech therapist last year and really didn't get any clear-cut answers other than watch it for a year and see if it improves on it's own.

Has anyone's child had a lingual frenectomy?  Did it help their speech?

nope

I've never heard of that...what will that procedure entail?

procedure

Basically that flap of tissue that connects under his tongue to the floor of his mouth is too short, which doesn't allow his tongue proper range of motion.  So they will put him under, lift his tongue, and sever that tissue to allow the tongue to move more.  I've never noticed it until the dentist point it out, but he can't lift his tongue up very high and he can't stick his tongue out very far.  Clipping that tissue should allow his tongue to actually reach the roof of his mouth, so hopefully he will be able to say his L's properly...now when he says his name, he say Wuke instead of Luke (supposedly because his tongue can't reach the top of his mouth).

good luck

Good to know...I definitely learned something new today! Well, hopefully all will work out for Luke and his speech will be bounce back in no time after this little procedure!

Good luck and keep us posted!

teacher

I also talked to Miss Judy (his preschool teacher) and she said she knows of a child that had the same problem, had it fixed and it definitely made a difference with their speech.  That makes me feel better, I just hate that we have to put him under for it.

my mom is tongue tied but it

my mom is tongue tied but it never impeeded her speech so she never had to do anything about it. She can stick her tongue out just far enough to lick her lips (lol) growing up we always asked her to stick out her tongue and then would ask her where her tongue is or somthing like that, it was an ongoing joke...... but this doesn't sound funny, good luck with making this decision. It is always so hard to know what the right thing to do is for your kids.
