Has anyone else dealt with a child who stutters?  My son is almost 3 1/2.  It has never been a real problem up until now.  Before, we would notice he would stutter alot for a week or so, then he wouldn't do it again for a couple of months.  It has been 2 weeks now, and his stuttering is worse than I have ever heard it.  It takes forever for him to get a sentence out...repeating every word over and over.  I've read that if it comes and goes, it's probably something they will outgrow.  I also read that stress can cause it.  He started preschool in September, plus he's been sick since then, so I'm wondering if that could be what is triggering it.  Not to mention, the baby and I went to Florida last week for 5 days, so I wasn't home.  I know that really affected him, as he's been acting up mostly for me since I've been home.  Then, I was really looking forward to his speech evaluation at school, and the teacher informs me she doesn't have paperwork on him, and they must have missed him.  Great, now I have to arrange to have him evaluated myself.  ARG!  It's been a long week already :)  Anyway, has anyone else had a child who stutters?  How did you help them and deal with it?

Speech Therapy

The speech therapist from South Bend Schools worked with my son every week for 1/2 hour to an hour for two years during preschool. He was fine to start Kindergarten after that. I think it is good to start the speech therapy earlier and get it done before Kindergarten that way they have more confidence around their peers. Most preschools do work with the local school system to test speech and will refer children into a program, and it is of no cost to you through the public school system.

Jessica,
for us it was mild when they were little and would get nervous, excited or frustrated for words. Just remind him to slow down and think about the word he wants to use. Remind him to calm down that you are willing to wait to listen to what he has to say.
Follow through with that speach issue at preschool too!

stuttering

an evaluation by a therapist is highly recommended, but stuttering can actually be normal & isn't always a concern until age 5 or 6. my daughter goes to the SB schools 2 day/week for therapy classes. she started with first steps about age 2 until age 3 & then started in the SNAP/PALS program. you should be able to consult your pedi.

speech therapy

Our preschool works with a program in Penn Schools.  He only had school one day last week, so I'm hoping the lady will make it out to evaluate him this week.

Question: do the speech therapists that work with kids in the presschools, have they worked with your children individually, or as a group with other kids?  Just curious...thanks for your responses!
