If you haven't heard the story in the news, a local South Bend Mom Jennifer Bishop was fatally shot in a burglery while she was shopping in Chicago. She has 3 children under the age of 8 with the youngest being less than 1 year old. She was shopping on Saturday while her husband attended a conference for work.

I am sure that I am not the only one, but instantly when I read the details there was a connection... she was almost the same age as I am and her kids are close in age to mine and she happens to be a southside mom. It always makes me stop and think more when I have something in common with someone, and I just can't imagine how hard it will be on her husband to take over everything on his own of course while working to support the family. Her parents live nearby so I am sure there will be some help there, but it is an overwhelming thought to wonder about when the kids are so young.

Does anyone else ever think about safety and security when they go out in public? The mall shooting that happened before Christmas got me thinking too, but it wasn't as close to home so it is easy to dismiss. I have looked around in stores while shopping and thought which way would I go if something were to happen. But obviously if something were to happen, it will not be when I have thought out a plan anyway.

I was just getting ready to post this!

I was just getting ready to post this same topic!  I saw the interview with her fellow nurses on the news, and my heart just broke for her family and friends.  What an awful tragedy!  To answer your question, YES, I do think about things like this often.  I never used to, but since having children, it is on my mind ALOT!  I just can't imagine how a family gets through something like this.  It could happen to anyone, anywhere.  As much as I'd like to stay home, never put myself or my family in danger, its just not possible.  There are so many lunatics in the world, and it's so scary to think they are sitting next to us in the restaurant, or behind us in the check out line at the grocery store, or sitting next to us at a stop light.  As Julie said, it's hard to plan a way out if a situation like that arose.

Thought and prayers go out to her family.  I just can't imagine!

Shooting

I just don't understand what this world is coming to your not even safe shopping or sending your kids to school I think it being on the news makes it worst I didn't read the story or listen to it I just don't want to hear it I got the headline but I don't want the details.
It seems to just encourage them people to keep doing it.

all the time

Yes, I think of it all the time. I think about the situaitons at school more though, I think, as my kids are in school everyday. The Greene school kids update was on the news tonight. The one parent didn't think her son meant to do anything by touching and passing the gun around, but didn't bother to report it. The kid looked sortta sad, but he has to learn early before he too would fall through the cracks of our systems and then intend on using a gun. The schools and society has to make a impact because so many parents don't care anymore or are too tired to. I so much want to be here for a long time for my family and want them to be with me as well, but we must live a life too. There is a fine line between taking to many precautions and being paranoid. God knows our destinies and won't give us more than we can handle. We are the people we are today because of the experiences in the past. We must use them to our advantages and become stronger characters.

Overwhelmed

My husband works at Memorial and said that everyone was walking around in a daze as soon as word of the shooting had spread. Personally, I have a hard time thinking about it or I might never leave my house again! We lost our first born to SIDS three years ago and since then I have to spend a lot of time controlling my thoughts and emotions so I don't get depressed. The shooting is something that is hard to wrap your mind around and so many lives have been changed forever.
