Riley's

My son Michael was born with a cleft lip and had surgery at Riley's to repair the cleft. We went down for an initial consultation, the surgery and then for the follow-up. The doctor was wonderful (he was an oral surgeon and a plastic surgeon). Everything went well though plan for wait for a while. Each time (except for the surgery day) we had a long wait in the waiting room and wait for the physician and team. We had a bit of a challenging time trying to find the correct place to go though some construction was going on when we went, almost 3 yrs ago. I'd give yourself plenty of time to get down there. The nurses in the Recovery Room were WONDERFUL. Everyone was very pleasant. I know someone who has taken her son to Riley's numerous times (Cleft lip/palate and issues with his skull) and had positive experiences.

Hope things go well for your little one,
Patty

It depends on what you're going for

They are adding on to Riley's right now so there is alittle construction work. We live in Niles and always plan on a 4 hour trip in good weather. That allows us to stop in Kokomo and eat breakfast at Cracker barrel.

We go down every three months for Neurology Clinic for Botox injections and it's a clinic so wait time depends on the day. The least was 5 minutes and the most 1 hour.

We go down every six months for:
Audiology - remapping of Bekka's cochlear implant and we are a part of two research projects to help develop new ways to do hearing tests on babies/toddlers.

Cerebral Palsy Clinic: again the wait depends on what's going on, once a year we have to get x-rays first. I love this clinic because we stay in one exam room and everyone comes to us. She sees three different specialty doctors and four therapists. So we're there anywhere from 2-4 hours but it's all done in one shot.

Bekka got her cochlear implant when she was one year old. They are amazing!

riley

we are going to see the gi peds dr because the one in ft wayne was terrible i do not like him at all so i think the drs actually office is in carmel be he is with rileys do they usually just do the consult and than have you come back for further testing and such

MiraclesMommy's picture

I would guess

I would guess that it would just be a consult only first. Then come back for testing. If you need to stay overnight they have the Ronald Mc Donald house which is kinda iffy if you get a room, you won't know until that day or there's a website that offers hotel discounts for Riley's pts.

Here's the link to the hotel we stay at. It's brand spankin new right across from Lucas Oil Stadium and 5 minutes from Riley's

They offer the discount there.

Hotels

If you have to stay in a hotel and can't get a room at the Ronald McDonald house, I would recommend using priceline.com to set your own price. We were down there quite a bit last year, my son had 3 different stays and the closest hotel that is basically on campus still runs a lot even with the discount. We found that the hotels will give you maybe 10% off, it really isn't significant.

So we learned quickly to use priceline, even at 7 pm we could still book a room to use that night. Always choose a 4 or 5 star hotel and put in a low price of $40, since you only get one try at a particular area and star level you might have to change it if the first one gets denied. We stayed at the Crown Plaza and Radisson right downtown several nights for the $40-$50 range (plus tax). You can also take the free IndyGo "Red Line" shuttle that goes between downtown and the IUPUI campus where Riley is located. That will save you on paying parking twice (at the hospital garage and downtown). There are lots of computers available for families to use at Riley, although the most consistently working computers are in the library at Riley which closes at 5 most days. So if you have to stay at least you have some ideas of how to cut the costs. If you have questions though, let me know.
