We are starting to look for a puppy. I know I want something little, preferrably something mixed. Maybe with poodle or yorkie. Has anyone bought a puppy recently or do you know of any good breeders in the area? I have started looking but it is really overwhelming and I am so scared after seeing the Oprah on puppymills. We'd love to find a healthy puppy from someone who doesn't breed lots of dogs. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on where to begin???

I'd like advice too

We also are discussing getting a puppy, so I'd appreciate some advice on where to start as well. Thanks.

Puppies

I don't know about breeders because my dad got his dog from out of state, but I wanted to suggest a breed for you. My dad has a Welsh Terrier or an Irish Terrier. I can never remember which one, but one has a better temperament than the other. They're smaller in size, but not as small as a yorkie or a poodle. He's playful when you want him to be a pretty laid back over all. Awesome dog!!!

No Miniature Pinchers

I love my mini-pin Chance but if I would have known how unruly they could be I would have never gotten one as my first dog. They are really cute but they are hard to housebreak due to small bladders and if you spoil them while puppies (as I did before I learned not to) they do not listen to you worth anything. Chance is very playful with the kids and that is a plus and he is a sweet lap dog at times but when he is not in the mood to listen, then don't bother trying to stop him. If you have had a dog before and are good with housetraining/behavior training then they are good dogs but as a first puppy I wouldn't recommend it

We have a mix terrier right now, and he is great, although a bit jumpy and as we have young kids, that can be bad. At the same time, my son, who gets punished when he does this, plays hard on the dog, and my son is only one and half. You have to be careful with any terrier mix and children as they dont always mix.
I grew up with Samoyeds. This is a dog that gets as large as a chow (sometimes larger, but that pends on the parents) and they are known as a top breed for children. They have the same hair as a chow, expect they are all white. Yes, they do shed, but we never had a problem keeping up on it. We have had them since I was two and my parents still own them today. There is a breeder in Niles Michigan... cant remember the name of the place.... if you are interested, I will get that piece of info.
Another good breed is a Husky. they do not get very large, and again, are good with children.
Poodles I have heard and have witness they INCREDIBLE energy they have and if it is not filtered properly, will cause problems. Yorkies are ADORABLE, but again, they are fragile, so if you have young children, it might not be the best family breed.
I would look up breeds and find out what would be best for your family. Then, you can always google breeders in your area. They should be licensed to breed dogs, and if you go there, you should take a tour of their facility. should they not allow you to do so, back out. Alot of people that I have known who have received full -bred dogs have gotten them out of state, and they never go to the faciltiy. We did that with one of our samoyeds. We got him from North Carolina, and although we loved our dog dearly, something happened to him when he was young, as he would FREAK out when have to go into his crate. We found out later the breeder was horrible and eventually was put out of business. Another great place to ask are your local vets, as they will probably have some breeders as customers and tell you which ones to talk to.
There are my thoughts, hope that helps. :)

king cavaliers

Has anyone ever had one or known one? We are seriously thinking about buying one, but they are quite expensive. I was wondering if they are worth the money and if they were good family dogs. Everything I have read seems great, any thoughts???
