My 4 year old was invited to a birthday party for a boy in his preschool class. I don't really know the boy, and haven't heard my son mention him but figured that we would take him just for the "social experience". I don't have regular birthday parties for my kids every year to invite friends, partly because I don't want the hassle and expense of big parties for every birthday but also because I don't want them to expect lots of presents each year either. I don't know where we would possibly keep all the presents if they invited friends each year too. So I am not sure how much is appropriate to spend in this case. I know if it were me, I would encourage other parents that small inexpensive toys would be great (easier to find a place to put away). I was thinking maybe a small lego set in the $5-$10 range, and maybe a sheet of stickers or something like that.

What amount do you think is appropriate for a classmate?

Target's dollar section

Right now they have a ton of Spiderman stuff (if he's into Spiderman).  They have these little drawstring backpacks, socks, temporary tatoos, stickers, little erasable boards....maybe a few of these things you could put together a fun little bag, and it wouldn't be too expensive either.

I agree, $5 - $10 would be more than enough, especially if they aren't really friends.

$5.00

My 5 year old has also been invited to preschool b-day parties and we spent $5.00 for each...and about $10.00 for her "bestest friend" :)

We love Target's dollar spot as well...they have some neat children's gardening stuff! Michael's craft store had some cool $1.00 items as well... 2 decks of Spiderman and Diego playing cards..Go Fish/Crazy 8's and lots of neat foam projects. Oh, and The Children's Place at UP mall had sunglasses 2/$5.00.
