Hello to all of the moms out there dreaming of working from home...I am just like you...I need some feedback on a craft... product... for years i have been making diaper cakes and i get rave reviews on them. I get rave reviews on them at every shower i go to. .. and i absolutely love to do them.. however i seem to give away way more than i sell...Any ideas on marketing them besides ebay? ps. my husband thinks they are silly and would never make us money... is he right?

Only to a small market

I think that the majority of average people wouldn't buy one even though they are really cool for a shower gift. If I could make one myself I would certainly consider doing that, but I wouldn't waste the money paid to someone else that I could have used toward a shower gift. There are people who would see it totally different though and would buy it just as a decoration for a new mom because it is so cute, but those are the people who either have plenty of money and don't watch their budget very close or maybe people that just have never budgeted their money and don't consider the price of paying someone else to make their gift. If I had to guess who would be most likely to purchase, I would say women who don't have children of their own ... and don't quite realize the cost of diapers anyway (it is easy to rationalize that diapers will be necessary so why not buy it in the form of a cake). And also Aunts or Grandmas of a new mom who might have a little more disposable income.

Have you ever tried selling

Have you ever tried selling them at a craft bazaar or some place like that? I know some places offer tables for as little as $15 so even if you didn't sell a lot, it wouldn't be too huge of a committment. If you tried to sell them at a place like that at least you would have some idea of the interest level. Altough I've never seen one, it sounds like a really cute idea!

diaper cakes

I just googled "diaper cakes" since I had never seen one and I found some websites that sold them for quite bit of $! Maybe there would be a market for them, especially if you tried to sell them locally. Good luck! I say go for it!

weddings too

You could expand and do cakes (using towels) for weddings too.  It's a super-cute idea.

My first thought was craft shows, like Monica said.  Or maybe craigslist?

Try it

I sold a few two years ago at my church's craft show. There isn't a lot of interest because they are easy to make or everyone has a gift already. I say put them out there if you like doing the craft. And make up some with the dish cloths for weddings. It provides versitility and have a sign-up sheet and little business cards with your information so people can take the card that day and have a cake made later when they may need it .

thank you...

Okay ladies i appreciate the feedback...i have tried craigslist... i actually got a good response however when it came to them picking a theme of there own it seemed to difficult for them... i think an impulse is best...i have made the towel ones and have a hand towel slash pot holder one also...i was wondering what everyone thought about trying to get a simplle one in a hospital gift shop....probably need to move mountains for that one...
