We had our insurance meetings at work last month. One of the ladys there to talk to us was from the Memorial System. She talked about the Med-Point express. i went up to her afterwards and told her about the day Olivia wasn't feeling well and i went to take Olivia there and that the services aren't meant for children under 2. She works for Memorial and didn't know it. LOL. I thought it was funny.

funny!

That is really funny!  You know what, I even talked to someone from MedPoint Express and they said that age 2 isn't necessarily the cutoff, but they just prefer to keep not to work on kids much under 2.  She said if it was something minor, they wouldn't turn away a child under 2.  I suppose it depends on which location you go to and the RN working.  That is really strange that even someone from Memorial wouldn't know!

Not that strange

I work as an RN at Memorial's Children Hosptial here in SB, yes we are considered a Children's Hospital and we are breaking ground this Fall for our own building that will be attached to Memorial and the projected completion date is in 2012. We are the 2nd largest employer in this area and we all can't possibly know everything about all the facilities that Memorial offers healthcare services at. I in fact know nothing about the med point express. What I do know is that I would only go where Pediatric nurses and physicans are caring for kids, unless it was something that I was sure was minor. I don't really know how true it is that the services are not meant for peds patients under 2, but more likely that the staff covering were not comfortable with their peds skills to give excellent care to that age group.I will definately check into this Medpoint express however.

How long have you worked in Peds @ Memorial

Hi! You might remember us. We haven't been there for a year (Thank God) but Rebekka was a frequent flyer for quite awhile. She was there on her first brithday for nine days with RSV (the first case) I know Kristen (blonde RN and Michaelen (sp?) When I finish my RN I want to work there. The staff there is sooo awesome. A bunch of nurses and students came in masks and all and brought Bekka a cake and sang to her. She of course being one wasn't into it but it was sure nice for me cuz you only have one first birthday and after being there with her the whole nine days it's really nice t ohave something like that.

Ok back on subject::::::

I used to work for Lee Memorial in Dowagiac and our walkin cinic did not see children under two. We had walk in hours at our Peds office. I know that Bekka's ped Navarre Pediatrics have "after" offic ehours and they're open on Sat and Sun for a bit.

Peds RN

I have worked at Memorial for 11 years on peds and I have been a RN for 8 years now. I used to work full time nights but then switched to every other weekend day shift in July 2002 after my daughter was born. IT's a great place to work. Michaeleen is now our unit director and she is great to work with. I also float to NICU a lot in the summer to fill in the hours that they need when we are low on patients. I am glad to hear that your experienc at Memorial Peds was a positive one. WE do our best to make a bad time the best it can be! I probably would remember you if I saw you, but I'm not great with remembering names without faces. I hope your daughter is doing great at this time and that we will only see you for a visit or for a job!! Keep working on that license and check us out when you have it! Also we employee student nurses if you are ever looking for a job and you are in school. Take care! Wendy

I think you took care of my daughter!

My daughter was a pt back in 04 with Scolded skin syndrome (staph infection). She was only 14 mths when she was there. I can happily say she is now getting ready to start Kindergarten and she is happy and healthy. Thanks to the staff and Dr Sweeney, we caught the infection before it spread past her hips and to this day she has no visible signs or scarring. The staff was so wonderful during her week stay and a great support to me as I had to watch my baby go through debreadment and have to be put on morphine. Anyways, I just wanted to thank you all and hopefully you can pass this messgae on to others that were there back in 04. Thanks, Sierra's mom.

Glad to hear about the success stories

I probably did I kind of remeber your daughter's case. I am sure glad to hear about the positive experience that you and your family had on our unit. Sometimes as a nurse it feels like all we do is paperwork and cause more discomfort by the procedures and IV starts to our patients, even though we know it is necessary and what we have to do get the kids feeling better. My own son was a pt when he was 21 months old with RSV, deyhydratin, and ear infection. I remember feeling so sad and helpless when they started his IV and drew labs, but I had come to my wits end trying to keep him hydrated at home and in some ways I felt good that he would be fixed soon and I wouldn't have to worry about the dehydration leading to something more serious. I guess in my situation I felt good knowing that it was a minor illness and not something so intense as was in your situation. I will be happy to pass on the message. Wendy
