Laundry detergent
I found this website where this guy wrote an awesome article on making your own laundry detergent. He includes pictures, experiments, etc. He concludes he can make enough detergent for about 312 loads of laundry for about $7! There are lots of readers who posted reviews, and most say it's a great idea, and some give a few other twists on his recipe. Here is his website: www.thesimpledollar.com
I get alot of my deterget free, or close to free from CVS, but this I may have to try (good to keep on hand for if I run out of liquid and can't find a good deal).
Has anyone experimented with making your own detergents? What was your recipe? Was it worth the time, and how did it compare to store detergents?

interesting!
That site was interesting. Although I don't know if its worth the time it takes to make ? Sometimes you have to pay for convience. I am rather a picky person when it comes to laundry. With 3 kids, a hubby that works around ink and grease and then the farm work I have found that Wisk works the best here. It truely gets the stains out and keeps the clothes smelling good(even under stress and sweat and all those farm smells). And then we also deal with skin issues and no one is bothered by Wisk. A good thing.
High Efficiency Washers
My mom got us a new set and it's HE so we have to use special soap. I use Purex I can usually get it on sale and I got coupons from the company because I emailed them asking for some :) It works well for our family. Convienence can be costly but nice.

I have made my own laundry soap using Borax, Washing Soda, and Fels Naptha Soap. This makes quite a bit and you only use 1-2 tsps. Don't expect it to suds up though. All the ingredients can be found in the laundry aisle at Martins. With this soap you don't need any bleach or brightner because Borax and washing soda ( not baking soda) will naturally brighten your clothes. I use this because of chemical sensitivities in my home.
smell?
How does it smell?? I like my clothes to smell nice! I always use fabric softener anyway, so probably not a huge deal.

There is a faint smell. The borax and washing soda do not have a smell. The fels naptha soap(which has been around forever)has a pleasant smell. The receipe calls for grated naptha soap. It is like grating very, very, hard cheese. The borax and washing soda both come in a big box. Martin's has the best price on the naptha soap.
