How to file taxes?

A quick overview of our situation: We've always filed Married Filing Jointly. In 2009 I took a part time job working from home, I was considered an employee (got a 1099), claimed married with 1 allowance. The work was very sparatic over the past year and only amounted to a few thousand dollars throughout the year. What I didn't realize was that NO federal taxes were being taken out, so of course we owe those now. It is around $450 that we owe. I know nothing about taxes....would it possibly make a difference if we file Married Filing Separate? Just curious if there is anyone else in a similar situation with a regular full time income, plus a very small second income, and if it really makes a difference filing joint or separate.

i know in child support

I know this is late but just in case you haven't filed yet. You get a big penalty for filing seperate when married and the penalty is much more than the $450 that you will have to pay from the 1099's. My husband and I have the same situation, he gets 1099's from doing odd jobs at his regular job. I played around and in the end, I would get a penalty if he filed separate from me and it was just easier to file joint.
Hope this answers your question:)
