Front page of the Sat. Tribune
Did anyone else see what made front page news on the Sat. Tribune?? Planned Parenthood is giving away free emergency contraceptive on Feb. 26th. Is it just me, or is it completely irresponsible of the Tribune to make this front page news? First of all, I don't think it's worth the free advertising PP is getting, and it shouldn't be news at all, but why on earth is it on the front page, above the fold, first thing you see when you pull the paper out of your box? If they are going to waste ink and paper on the story at all, put it inside the paper somewhere, where young adults and teens won't see it laying around this weekend and think "wow, free emergency contraception on the 26th." Nothing like give them permission to go out and be irresponsible in the days prior to the 26th! My children aren't old enough to be infuenced by this yet, but it still makes me so mad as a parent! I can't believe that PP is having an "event" based on passing out free emergency contraceptive, and I think it's totally irresponsible of the Tribune to announce and help support it.
Any thoughts?

It's not just for teens
I'm almost 30 and when I was 25 I used it. I can't be on birth control 24/7 because of an adrenal tumor so we used other options but when that fails you need something. I think it breaks down to what your beliefs are. I worked in a 80% medicaid family practice and I couldn't push birth control enough! Many teens don't have parents that even care enough or are envolved enough in the teens lives to make the teens feel that they can go "talk" to them. The ER pack was only available by prescription for a long time, now you can get it from the pharmacy without one. Maybe they shou;dn't have put it on the front page but I think it's a good idea to make it known.

Our miracle is gonna be Four on February 13th!!
1 lb 5 ozs 13" to 28lbs 36" Time sure flies!
Exactly!
For adults who are being responsible, that wasn't my concern. My point was plastering it on the front page of the paper, which goes out to thousands of families, the paper will probably sit around on the kitchen counter or dining room table all weekend for some who aren't so responsible to see. I have no qualms about birth control, I take birth control. I was just shocked to see it advertised on the front page of the paper as if McD's was giving away a free cup of coffee to the first 1,000 customers. It came across to me as an invitation to go out and be irresponsible on the 25th, because on the 26th you can get it taken care of for free. I wasn't trying to imply all who use PP are irresponsible. As with anything, there are always exceptions.

I briefly scanned the article
So is this like what used to be referred to as the "morning after" pill? When i read your post first I didn't realize what it was, I was just thinking they were handing out contraceptives. I would agree that maybe it can be available in emergency cases but parents, teachers and counselors should be the target for the information and not just any teenage child. Otherwise it will encourage more teens to just do it without having to plan ahead and seek out some type of protection.
I was with you
I was simply saddened and slightly shocked to see that article "front and center" in the paper. It made me truly think about what kind of influence the government might have over the informationt that we receive. To me, it made me feel as if the people that have been trying so hard to have the morning after pill approved for over-the-counter usage were setting this whole thing up just to see how many people would use it and then come out with some report saying how much demand there is for this pill so it needs to be available all of the time and to anyone. Sorry, but that's just the conspiracy theorist in me talking. I don't personally have a problem with the morning after pill as long as it's used when it is medically necissary or as a result of sexual abuse, but should not be an answer to carelessness. Just my two cents.
