Hi,
My cats and dog have fleas, so I gave them frontline. Well a week later I noticed the fleas were worse.
Does anyone know of something safe to use around babies that will deflea a home? I don't have a lot of money to get stuff from the vet at $15-18 a pop. What do you use that works and how much does it cost? Thanks

Zodiac

My dog got fleas a few years ago really bad when we took her to Florida. Our vet gave us Frontline and it definitely doesn't take care of them alone, it helps to prevent the fleas from multiplying, but it still takes some time for that to kick in. We had to use the Zodiac flea spray from Pet Supplies Plus or probably Pet Smart. I didn't want to put anything on the carpet because of the kids either, so just spraying the dog was enough. However the spray smells very strong like rubbing alcohol, so the dog hates it and it is kind of a strong scent to spray around the kids so I would do it outside. We also swept often because that helps to get fleas and eggs out of the carpet. I read that the eggs can live in dormancy deep down in the carpet for 6 months, and think I saw some evidence of that because even when the fleas were getting much better and we thought they were gone... a few would return months later. We just kept consistent with the spray and the Frontline and they finally were gone.

Dawn Is the cure

My soft coated wheaten got fleas from the groomers. and instead of putting toxins on her I bathed her in Dawn dish soap! It killed off all the fleas then I bathed her again two days later to make sure I got them all and she has been flea free for the low price of 1.26

that is a fine solution as

that is a fine solution as long as you don't have an infestation of fleas. I will work with a few adult fleas if caught right away.

Dawn is just great all around

They use it to clean animals after oil spills and once my kitten got into something he shouldn't have and after a bath in dawn he was good to go. I use that to bathe my animals also, works great and is super cheap. That what my vet told me to use. However my flea problem is larger than dawn and I need something for cats and dogs that is safe around babies.

biospot

We normally will use a product called biospot. I believe that biospot was the first vet prescription spot on treatment, now available otc. We also use a company called Jeffers vet supply. I can get the product from them for a much cheeper price. Check out their website. I think its www.jeffers.com they have a dog section, cat section and other livestock too.

The biospot breaks the cycle of the flee not allowing it to reproduce. I don't know what frontline does. but it is also suggested that you treat the living space as well because fleas can jump off the pets. I wonder for a cost effective way if using a steammer (for doing clothes) would work ?? I know someone had told me that they used a steammer for doing drapes and furniture while they had a case of lice, because it is suggeseted that you put everything in the dryer to kill lice but a steamer works for that too.

Biospot

My sister used that and it almost killed her cat and the vet said it is the most common poisoning they see. It's okay for dogs but cats are so sensitive I just don't want to chance it. She is my other baby.

there is a cat version of

there is a cat version of the biospot.... I have used it for many years with success. You can not use the same on dogs and cats. The active ingredient is different.

Now my sister used a cheepy version ... I can't remember the name of it, I can see it but can remember it, on her cat because she couldn't find biospot and she ran into trouble too, the company wanted to pay her off with a small reimberment check for the product and no vet bills.

Biospot is a good product and I will stand behind it. I have even used the kitten verson of the product with success.

I am sorry to hear that your sister had trouble. Jeffers vet supplies stands behind their products as well. They do not offer inferrior products and will not hesitate to pull products from their catalog.

why ?

I did some reading, according to frontline website you should expect the situation to appear worse at first as the fleas will "surface" first because the insecticide is working. Forcing the fleas to the top of the haircoat. You can bath your cat to get the remainder of the life less fleas off of it and the frontline will continue to work too. You should use the topline a couple months in a row to make sure that you stop the life cycle of all other flea that will jump on her/him from the sleeping quarters. I also visited the website i suggested and you can buy frontline for a six month supple for just over 61.00 , that lessens your monthly cost to just over ten dollars vs 15-18.... those vets have to get thier cut of the money too!

Good luck
