My son is almost 3 1/2, and I'm thinking it's probably time to get him to a dentist for his first visit.  How old were your kids when they had their first visit?  How did they handle it?  Do you use a special kid's dentist office?  I have to make the dreaded phone call to insurance to see if they even cover him yet!

First dental appointment

For my older son the first appointment was about 2 1/2, he had some staining that we were concerned about but a battery operated toothbrush fixed it. The dentist told us if your child is very calm they might do a quick check and cleaning before 3, but most are at least 3. He is now 7 and just got his first cavity, and the dentist recommended that he go to a pediatric dentist, Dr. John's. The visit there was very good, but they are like a factory with tons of assitants and lots of kids everywhere and they have a process to go through with each kid (like taking a polaroid with Dr. Johns on the first visit). As far as I could tell he was the only dentist there and they still managed to get him in and out in about 35 minutes with all those people there. Our regular dentist said it wasn't a particularly bad cavity or anything, they just prefer to refer wiggly kids for someone who is more set up to handle children.

Dentist

I had a hard time finding a dentist for my daughter because we are on Medicaid and she was 2 most dentist don't see them till 3 but I wanted to get her in so I took her to Small Smiles and her teeth are perfect they said. I don't take her back till March. And with Small Smiles I did not have to go back with her I waited in the waiting room. It can be soo stressful hearing them cry and scream.

Dentist

I started taking my son at 3 years old. We go to the peds dental center in Plymouth. They are all so nice there. My insurance covers 100% of cleaning twice a year, but they only cover one flouride treatment a year, but I still get it done every six month, Its only like $25 or so for the flouride treatment.
