Creative Writing "camp"
Submitted by Julie on April 13, 2008 - 11:15pm.
My 2nd grade son is struggling with the creative side of writing. He just has a hard time developing an idea for a story, and what little he writes is just missing a lot of details. It was definitely an area that his teacher mentioned needs some work over the summer. Has anyone heard of any kind of summer programs that might encourage creativity in story telling or writing? Any ideas on places to check out?

Have you looked into Kumon or Sylvan? I don't know exactly what services these places offer, but those are the first two that came to mind. I'm sure they would be pricier than say a "camp" of some sort. Did his teacher have a recommendation for how you should go about helping him this summer?
Hey, how was FL??

Bethel College
I know that when I was younger I went to Bethel College for a class. I don't know if they still have them but I think that it was for a couple of weeks and for a couple of hours a day. You might want to contact them and find out.
Also, what about IUSB. I know that they have summer college for grade school kids. You might want to check out there website also. I know that my cousin went there summer.
Good Luck.

Good ideas
I hadn't thought of Kumon or Sylvan. I will have to do some calling and see what they offer.
Florida was great, it only rained the first day (which was the end of several days of rain) and then got warmer and sunnier from there. All our Disney days were perfect weather, and steady but not awful lines for rides. I think we will take next year off of Disney and go again in two years though... it was exhausting!
writing help?
Julie, you could also check with your son's classroom teacher or the resource/special education teacher at his school. They may be able to give you some ideas for activities/strategies that you could use with him at home. Also, you could check for a private tutor, like a former teacher, or a teacher in his building that may tutor after school and in the summer. I have tutored in the past, and I have a good friend who is a former teacher who also tutors. PM if you are interested in more info.
