My boyfriend needs to get car insurance, he was with Progessive but wants to change. Does anyone have any suggestions? I go through State Farm but they needed proof of his insurance he has now and he hasn't had car insurance for the past two months...We need to do this ASAP as for one he shouldnt be driving w/o insurance and two with the weather the way it is anything can happen!! :( Thanks!

Question
1) Did he not like Progressive?? We were thinking of switching to them. Allstate is getting outrageous and we have no tickets/ claims and it keeps going up.
All insurance co will ask for proof of current ins, if there is a lapse they will charge you alot extra... don't know the specific reason why but they do. One of my family memebers had that happen but after 6 months they dropped her rate. I think they want to know that you have a good standing with another company or something.... HTH!

Erie Ins.
I went with Erie Ins. Summers Agency located behind Penn High. I got a decent rate but yes, almost everyone asks if you have a policy with another ins. agent. You could always say the car was broken down for a couple of months and you let the insurance lapse while getting it fixed. Dont know if that would work. These ins. companies are a trip anymore. Good luck.
AIG
We use AIG, and we've never been able to find someone else who could even compare, as far as price goes. We can't even "bundle" with our home owner's insurance and get a comparable rate that way through Erie-Wesolowski. We also have no tickets or claims. However, I'm going to guess that if he has no insurance currently, the rate will most likely be outrageous because I think they will all ask for proof of insurance.

I'm in the insurance business and can tell you any insurance company will require you to provide at least 6 months of prior coverage. If he cannot provide 6 months of prior insurance, he will be charged a higher premium for at least the first 12 months because, according to the industry, he is a higher risk. However, if he cancelled his policy because he did not own a vehicle, this will not affect his premium. Keep in mind insurance follows the vehicle, not the operator. So if he is driving your car and gets into an accident, your insurance company will have to pay out. I can't really advise you on a specific insurance company to go with because each rates differently. I can tell you if he has poor credit, multiple violations or accidents, you would be best to contact an insurance broker who will do the shopping for you.
