My son started having blood in his stool about a month ago...it has happened a few times and we've seen his doctor, an allergist, and have had bloodwork and allergy testing done, and no answer. He is otherwise thriving well and seems very happy and content, though he spits up a lot. He is breastfed only. The next step is to take him to Riley for a scope (in which he would have to receive anesthesia to have the procedure done). I really don't want to have to put him through this...but I'm not sure we have a choice. For now I am continuing a no dairy diet myself, and considering block feeding. Any thoughts?

Very interesting

How old is your son?

We had this happen to our son. But he was 3 1/2 - 4 years old when it happened. We went through all of the blood tests and did stool tests and nothing was found. Finally his doctor decided that we needed to go and see a doctor in Fort Wayne. Our son had to go to a fort Wayne hospital for some other work. I remember them giving him some sort of stuff in his blood stream to go when they did the xrays they could see his intestists. He had to sit on a table very still for about an hour and half. All of those tests came back fine. The next step was to have more tests like this done but with a scope. We desided that we were not going to put him through all of that. We now just test him every so often for blood in his stool but get nothing back. We even put him on a stool softner thinking that he was having problems going to the bathroom. I believe that we have had red stool only one other time. And if I remember correctly it was because he was taking some medicine at that time that was red. So I have always wondered if that was the first problem also.

It was very hard for us to make the discusion as what to do with all of this. I think that my husband and I were totally beside ourselves when it came to this. We could not believe that there was something wrong with our son. Who to that day did not show any signs of being sick.

Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Doctor

We first saw Doctor Gohill. He was very good with us. He went through everything with us and explained everything in detail which was very nice. My husband is very picky when it comes to who our son sees and for our sons care.

re to blood in stool

I can say first had how scary and consuming that can be! My son (now two) had this form almost the begining. I was breast feeding... tried removing dairy, wheat, almost everything that could possible cause allergies. After 4 months I tried nutramagin and that day he never had blood agian...sadly I did quit breast feeding. many people told me to continue but for me I could not stand the blood in the diaper daily. today he is sensitve to any dairy...so he drinks fortified rice milk and many green veg.
hope this helps....and know YOU know what is best!!

blood in stools

When this happened to my daughter at 3, I was informed of a variety of culprits. Initially I cut back her dairy and saw an allergist. We did a high fiber diet and fiber therapy. Each month the problem worsened, and no doctor thought anything was wrong due to the fact that all bloodwork was normal and all stool samples indicate no sign of blood(even though I could see the blood strands). Ater an exam at Children's Memorial, they concluded she was "holding it in" intentially and prescibed daily miralax. My gut said otherwise. I begged for another visit a week later, (by then she was needing a pad)and insisted on a colonscopy. Indeed they found a poyp and promply removed it. She's been fine ever since. Purpose of my story is that all of the doctors said that children rarely get colon polyps. My gut kept telling me what was wrong the entire time and I literally had to beg to get that colonoscopy.
