So we just had the flu go through my house this week. My son is doing fine completely better but my 8 month hasn't puked in 2 days but she still has bad diarrhea. I called the doctor yesterday when I was home with her and she said to give her yogart and stuff hi in fiber. I did get her to eat some yogart but it hasnt seemed to help. I went back to work today and I called daycare and they said it wasnt bad so I figured it was getting better but tonight its bad again and ofcourse its the weekend now so we cant see the doctor until Monday. Its not a lot at one times but its enough to make her bottom sore. Does anyone know of things that will help stop diarrhea in an infant? My second question is what is the best diaper rash cream? We have been using Destin (alot we have already went through a whole big tube since Wednesday) and it has help (the rash could be alot worse) but her bottom area still looks sore and pink. Is there anything that works better then destin that you can get over the counter?

flu

First off for diahrea, they really don't like to give little ones stuff to stop it because it is not good for their system--the meds. But in an emergency I did use imodium for toddlers(we were at a weekend getaway and one of them got diahrea--What were we suppose to do, spend the whole weekend in the hotel room when there was no other health problems)

Sometimes it takes a bit of time for their intestinal track to get the right bacteria built back up after a viral thing like the tummy flu, so they can have the diahrea for a longer time. Also avoid milk products and cheese that will help. Lots of fiber, applesauce, apples, potatoes, yogart, cereal, rice.

You can get plain old zinc oxide for the bottom, you'll find it by the skin oniments at walmart... like two bucks a tube and it is one of the major ingredients in the more expensive creams for the bottom. It is a protectant--water proof. This is the cream that makes A&D white. You really need to watch for the secondary infection which ends up being bacterial. You can also use hydrocordison cream and a antifugual (athletes foot cream) if it appears to get worse. My doctor also reccommended to let them air dry. Put a old blanket down on the floor and and let them run around without a diaper on(I know it doens't sound ok, but the best thing for clearing up the bottom is fresh air and not a dark moist diaper--thats when everything starts to grow!

I would certianally also consider changing to a doc that has some sort of weekend calls. Michiana Pediatrics has weekend hours and evening hours. It is a fantastic group of doctors. Very dedicated to the little ones in our lives. :)

Good luck! These are all things that aid in the healing of the bottem

I would not use

I would not use hydrocortisone cream and/or an antifungal on an eight month old. If a diaper rash cream is not effective contact your pediatrician.

Ointment

I just got over this with my 14 month old from a reaction to antibiotic. Remember the B.R.A.T (bananas, rice, apples and toast) Diet. It keeps things down and it solidifies things. I gave my daughter dairy (cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese) 2x a day as well as bananas. It helped her get a lot better a lot faster.

As far as ointments go, we resorted to A&D Ointment. It's greasy, but it stays on and it heals. Our daycare uses it on any of the kids when they have diaper rash. It really does work.

I know this is no fun.

A&D

I second using A&D!  It heals very quickly, and sometimes we actually put Desitin over top of the A&D for overnight use.

Vaseline or Balmex

I have also used plain ole Vaseline with some baby powder sprinkled over the top. The Vaseline works as a moisture barrier so the next time your little one has a movement, it doesn't get the skin so easily. I also like Balmex...it seems to help take the redness away.

A & D

A & D ointment has been a lifesaver in our house...I've never used anything else. When you spread it on pretty thick, especially for overnight, it heals things up very quickly!
