Babies on Planes
Submitted by mamapeanut07 on March 2, 2008 - 2:39pm.
I have to take my daughter on a plane in April and I'm already a little anxious about it. Does anyone have any fabulous ideas for me to make the trip a little less stressful? I know the obvious give her a bottle on the way up and to give her Tylenol or Motrin before we board. I'm just curious if there are any other great tips out there.

age?
I hope I can help you but I would need the age of your baby first.
She'll be 10 months

Don't stress and enjoy!
10 months is still really easy. I don't really your baby but at home how or what she loves to be distract with? How long will be the flight? It's a direct flight?
My son is 20months now and he took already at least 15 flights so I will try my best to help you... sorry for all the questions but that will help a lot!
Small Planes
Well, we'll be on to separate flights. We're flying Cape Air out of SB to Indy one night and then catching an early morning flight to Florida. So, it's two direct flights. The one to Florida I would imagine is probably about 2 hours. I know the one to Indy might be a little rough because it's a small 8-seater plane. She loves to move, so I know sitting for two hours unless she's sleeping is going to be an issue. I like the idea of Baby Einstein or something like that to keep her occupied for a little while. She's not really one to sit in our laps either, which makes it kind of difficult. We didn't purchase a seat for her because she doesn't really like to sit in her car seat for long periods of time. We're just really hoping that she'll do well.
Maybe...
Maybe you will get lucky and the flight to Indy won't be full, so you can use an empty seat next to you. At least you can "test" her on the short flight! :) From Indy, your flight will probably be right at 2 hours. I would just make sure nap time is about 20 minutes after take off! Good luck!!

Plan a head
Those flights are not that bad. I would just make sure like it was said... nap time in the plane and not before. If she likes to move she will probably fall a sleep. My son he’s a none stop mover but in the plane he just slow down so much with the noises and movements. I always bring his favorite 3 books and 2 favorite toys so he feels comfortable. Don’t forget your snacks/lunch with you and rechange for him and you… I had a milk accident one time and one t-shirt extra was really helpful. Just plan a head.
DVD
Does she like Baby Einstein? We've always kept the kids busy on plane rides with a portable DVD player. Also, lots of snacks :) We just flew last week with the kids and thank goodness there was a baby that sat behind us. Both babies kept each other entertained!
If you are flying by yourself, sit in the isle seat, so you can get up and walk freely if you need to, without making people move. Also, the back of the plane is usually really loud, so if you need some noise to help baby fall asleep, go to the back of the plane and hang out!
Where are you flying, and do you know if you are flying on small plane? I ask because we go to FL a few times a year, and we fly out of South Bend. Only smaller planes fly out of SB (for the flights we go on), so you can only take small carry on bags. We always take a small bag to put under the seat in front of us...just big enough for 2 diapers, couple of small toys...just the necessities to get us through the 1 1/2 hr flight. Then I always take a bigger bag with a change of clothes, extra diapers & wipes, etc....enough to get us through a night, just in case something happens with our flights or something and we get stuck over night. But the bigger bag can't go under the seats...we drop it off with the stroller at the gate and it gets put under the plane and its waiting on us when we get off the plane. I didn't know this the first time we flew with the kids, and I had all of our stuff divided between our carry ons, and I had to rearrange everything because they wouldn't let us take the bigger bag with us on the plane as carry on.
