I took my son to the doctor today to follow up from our immediate care visit over the weekend.  Right before we left, I noticed he felt warm, and sure enough...almost 100 degree temp.  Our doctor said he never puts an asthma label on a child until they are around 5 years.  He said most infants and small children outgrow respiratory problems by then, so if they haven't, then they label it asthma.  Shawn does have some respiratory problems right now, but he thinks it's probably just caused from a bad cold.  However, since he has a wheezy cough and seems to have trouble catching his breath sometimes, he is taking Albuterol (sp??).  We will try that for a couple of days and follow up at his 6 month check up on Wed.

colds

Jessica,
my son has issues with asthma being brought on by viruses. I have to be really careful with him and colds in the fall from october to march. His gets bad enough that he gets croup from it and then gets to the point that he is stridrus (sp). We have oral steriods for him to get the swelling to come down and then we now have a inhailer for him to use during this time. It is so scary we ended up in er a year ago because the typical steam/cold air would not open his airway during a bout of croup.

My oldest daughter has issues of exercise induced asthma. She uses a inhailer prior to doing a workout like playing on a basketball team. Keeps the airway open and eliminates the burning sensation through her windpipe.

If the albuteral doesn't work or is working somewhat they can add the steriod as well.

pss..
my son had his first croup at 4 months. and continues to get the croup and problems with asthma more and more each year. They too told me he should out grow it. Just seems to get worse for us. I see alot of signs in him what I went through and now I don't have any major trouble. So hopefully he will still out grow it.

I hope he gets better soon.

I hope he gets better soon. It awful when kids are sick. I am sure that albuteral will help and he will be feeling great in no time.

Asthma Update

Your "asthma" breathing problem could be caused by you household cleaner, laundry soap, body soaps, carpet, pets or a variety of other home issues. You need to track when these are happening. Do they get worse after you have, put clean sheets on the bed? Put clean clothes on your child? After you clean the house? Spray air freasheners? Changed air freasheners? Vaccuumed? Dusted? Taken dishes from the dishwasher and put them directly on the table to eat? These can all trigger "asthma"-breathing issues! Let me know. I can give you some direction on what to do next.

thanks

He's actually fine now.  He was sick with a really nasty virus of some kind, and it was triggering some breathing problems.  After the cold went away, so did the breathing problems!

asthma before 5yrs old

my oldest was labeled with asthma at 18months old. My mom was about to get married to my stepdad and I flipped because my daughter was sleeping and I check on her and her stomach looked like there was an alien in there trying to get out then it looked like it disappeared you could almost see her spine from the front. It was crazy.

She has out grown most of the problems, now though. However if i bring the wrong cleaner or scent in the house watch out its visits to the ER because the home care isnt helping.

Actually last October when wal-mart was having a pictures with the kids sitting on straw. It was all wet inside and got moldy and she didn't know and sat on it. 2hrs later we had major asthma attack issues no home treatment was working. FINALLY took her to the ER and the steroid shot made her sicker than a dog but it did help her fight it all off and be back to normal within 4 days.

It's scary.

Asthma Update

Katrina,

Are you still buying your cleaning products from the store? What about laundry products? What are you using there? What home remedies are you using?

Some

I buy some cleaning products from the store, nothing with a STRONG smell during or after. Most of my good products are gone from use though. To clean my bathroom I use baking powder, water, with some vinegar. I have been told that baking powder is a really good product for cleaning around the house to save some money also. I will get my list out and post some ideas.

My laundry product I have tried almost everything out there and the only thing I have found for her that works is All Free and Clear. When she goes down to visit her dad he uses Tide and comes back in pain because the smell is so bad on her. I have finally told him that if he doesn't stop using it then he won't be able to keep the girls overnight because I can't have her keep coming home in pain from his tide smelling laundry.

Most of the time "IF" I have to use a product non-home remedy then I will make sure I can at least leave the windows open long enough for the smell to go away without freezing everyone out. I have a swiffer wet jet and we can't use the swiffer cleaning solution because the chemical in there is the same type of thing as in antifreeze and it is bad for Asthmatics.

As far as home remedies to try and help her. We start with trying to get to slowly breath in and out deeply to express the irritant out, when that doesn't work we will have her breath in an out with a wet washcloth over her face with a small fan blowing over her face and washcloth to get some clean moisture in her lungs. once those all fail we get the nebulizer out and then also the inhaler. We do those wait our time frame if possible and do them again until she is better. If we can't go the 4hrs wait time we go get some steriod medicine from the doctor which always takes care of the problem.

CURE for "Asthma"

I didn't know what to call it but "asthma" because my newborn's breathing was wheezy from day one. The peditrician reassured me that you couldn't be born with asthma, but did agree that his airway was underdeveloped or blocked and prescribed a breathing machine with medicine. We did that for one year. His breathing trouble was especially bad when he was sick with a virus.

Here's the CURE part....

I stopped in to a local chiropractor's office for other business and saw a brochure on childhood asthma, allergies and ear infections. The brochure read that during labor, a baby's spine and bones can be misaligned from going through the birth canal and easily block the airway. Makes sense,(squish!)so, I made an appointment. My son who was one year old then walked into the doctor's office that day wheezing, and walked out breathing normally. It only took the chiropractor a few seconds to locate the misaligned vertibrae, and that was the end of the story.

I am not foolish enough to think this would work for everyone. However, I do believe this treatment should not be overlooked. After all, a pedeatrician would have never suggested a visit to a chiropractor. By the way, that visit was only $23. And to think I had my son on a breathing medication he didn't need for an entire year, not to mention the cost of it.

This office also had brochures on ear infections stating that children can be adjusted to allow for better drainage of their ear canals so they don't get infections. My first child had two ear tube surgeries and now I will never know if that would have worked for her.

Please have an open mind that sometimes the best care for our children may not come from traditional methods of medical doctors. Moms should take the time to explore preventative and alternative health care options in conjunction with advice from a medical doctor.
